GMG on the Bony del Manyer and the Pic de la Carbassa
On 27 September, GMG climbed the peaks of Bony del Manyer (2,809 m) and Calabaza (2,736 m).
In the Catalan and Aragonese Pyrenees, there are a lot of peaks of around 3,000m, with mythical names, a must for all mountain enthusiasts. The Pica de Estados, the Puigmal, the Puigpedrós, the Pedraforca, the Bastiments, the Comapedrosa, the Perafita, the Carlit, the Aneto, the Posets, the Monte Perdido…, all are names that seem to speak for themselves, dignifying the summit to which they refer and, regardless of whether they present greater or lesser difficulty, they already give us to understand that we are not talking about just any hill.
On the other hand, there are other toponyms that do not predispose us to think of any mountain that is too mythical or special, such as the ‘Bony del Manyer and the Pic de la Calabassa’. Perhaps that is why we were pleasantly surprised when we reached these two summits. After a hike of about 15km and overcoming a positive difference in altitude of more than 1,200m without difficulty, we discovered that they are an exceptional viewpoint with impressive, wide open views, from where we could contemplate all the other summits we have called and which can boast a somewhat more epic name.
We start walking from the village of Girult, stopping for breakfast at the unguarded refuge of J. Folch, near the Engorgs lakes. From there we headed towards Portella d’Engorgs, where the border with Andorra runs, to continue gliding above 2,700m where the two summits meet. The descent was a bit of a leg-breaker, as we opted for a circular route that undoes the 1,200 metres of height difference in less than three kilometres.
A lunch in Cerdanya served to comment on the outing, let the knees rest and continue laughing for a while.
At GMG we will continue to climb mountains.
